patella problems

Postby Tommy O » Wed Feb 10, 2010 12:47 pm

so, ever since I hit a tree patella first (about 2001) at about 20 mph, followed closely by my face, I might add, I have pain over it with use. This includes biking frequently and running. I've started to use band with a little rubber portion that goes just below the patella and it seems to help some what but is not 100%.

I've had it MRI'd and a torn miniscus was discovered, despite that not being the area or problem I was complaining about. I was operated on last year for it (specifically avoiding the term repaired since it often hurts worse now). But the Dr. I went to apparently didn't see anything over the patella. He guessed it is bursitis. Aside from anti inflamitories and ice, is there anything else I can do? I can't imagine strength training would help, although I still try.

wow, I wrote alot. Let me know if you need any additional information. :)

Leg extensions and a beefy patella strap keeps my left patella happy.

If your insurance will allow you to use MEDSPORT, I 'd do it. They handle all of U of M's athletes injuries from toes and ankles all the way up to shoulders - knees included. Their surgeons & physical therapists are some of the best. Been to them previously for a shoulder problem & 7 years later for a hip problem. Both successfull recoveries without surgery.

Well, that sounds awesome and I'd love to, but what's insurance?

The surgery I had last year was my last hurrah for insurance.

Tommy O, Patella problems are difficult to treat but not impossible. Blunt force trama to the Patella does create tracking issues that can continue to be problematic after accute swelling and burses are resolved. The patella as part of the most complex joint in the Human body and is one of the most common and difficult problems orthopedic surgeons are confronted with. My suggestions are not to taken as treatment protocol, I am not a doctor. I don't know that you have a tracking problem, but what you descibe sounds like you have. I do have experience treating patella issues. I will give you the following link that can help with your understanding and after review if you think information is helpful we can talk in more detail. WWW.Bioskin.com; Click-Knee bracing, patellafemoral knee bracing-QLok. Click and look at information about Assessment, Education and Treatment of the Patellafemoral Knee.
