Volunteering @ Back Alley Bikes

Postby Snappy » Sat Aug 01, 2015 8:26 pm

I started volunteering at Back Alley Bikes in Detroit. Back Alley is an organization that works with the youths of the inner city to teach bike maintenance through their earn a bike program. This givew the kids a working knowledge of bicycles, a means of transportation for events that are available throughout the city, and to hopefully pass on meaningful life values. They have adult programs as well.

To find out more go to: http://thehubofdetroit.org/our-story/

To date I've put in 3 hours and plan to return for more. There is always room for more volunteers so think about signing up.

I put some time in at Back Alley yesterday to help out with the Noel Nights festivities downtown as well as the bike garage sale. There were approx 400 bikes that were being sold off due to lack of space in the warehouse. Back Alley will use the funds for their programs like youth earn a bike, kid bike give away, adult mechanic workshop, etc... For Noel Nights they had refreshments, an art sale, a raffle for new bikes, crafts made from spare bike parts, and super sweet head to head cycling challenge. They started to get a good flow of traffic just before I had to leave. So hopefully they got a good turn out and sold a lot of bikes.

In January they are holding the Bike the Blizzard event to raise additional money. Follow the link if you would like to learn more: http://thehubofdetroit.org/bike-the-blizzard/.

The art that was for sale wasn't specific to bikes and not sure if that stuff will be available at the hub. The craft table was for making ornaments made out of chains, old cassettes, and LEDS. They were also making little Christmas trees made of cassettes, spokes and LEDs, those looked pretty cool.
